On September 18, under the leadership of Professor Sun Shui, director of Joint Surgery Department of Shandong Provincial Hospital affiliated to Shandong First Medical University (Shandong Provincial Hospital), ROSA ® robot-assisted total knee arthroplasty based on image mode was successfully completed for the first time in China. The successful application of robotic system marks that the Joint Surgery Department of our hospital has officially entered the era of "intelligent robot" and further promoted the development of precision surgery.

Professor Sun Shui performs ROSA ® robot-assisted total knee arthroplasty

As the second clinical institution in China to carry out ROSA® robot-assisted knee arthroplasty, the Joint Surgery Department has applied the unique image modeling function of ROSA® robot in surgery. It only needs the anteroposterior and lateral X-ray films taken by the patients before surgery to generate an accurate 3D bone model through a patented algorithm and reduce unnecessary CT image examination. With the assistance of the robot, the surgeon can develop accurate preoperative planning through preoperative modeling, including prosthesis model, bone cutting thickness, bone cutting angle, joint line, etc. At the same time, the bone cutting module on the robotic arm can accurately perform the surgical planning and complete more accurate bone cutting.

Robot’s verification after prosthesis installation

As science and technology develop and society progresses, the demand of patients for high quality of life is becoming more and more urgent, and orthopedic surgeons also put forward higher requirements for the accuracy of joint replacement surgery. The assistance of high-end robotic system will further improve the controllability of joint replacement surgery, thereby significantly improving the effect of surgical treatment. In January 2019, ROSA® robot system has been clinically applied in many countries successively to assist orthopedic surgeons in complex surgical decisions and operations through positioning acquisition data analysis, assisting in planning, bone cutting and soft tissue evaluation, etc. With its smooth intraoperative operation, accurate prosthesis implantation and excellent postoperative alignment, it is favored by more orthopedic surgeons. Helped by robots’ precise assistance, joint surgeons with the rich surgical experience will bring more benefits to patients with joint diseases.
