　　On October 31, the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences released Science and Technology Evaluation Metrics (STEM) Ranking of Chinese Hospitals/Chinese Medical Colleges in 2020. Shandong Provincial Hospital affiliated to Shandong First Medical University (Shandong Provincial Hospital) ranked 47th among the medical institutions in China, up 8 positions than last year. This was the best ranking performance in history, and realized steady progress for three consecutive years. All medical specialties of the hospital were in top 100 in China. Endocrinology and Intensive Care Medicine were listed top 10 in China, ranked ninth. Obstetrics and Gynecology and Orthopedic Surgery were listed top 20 in China, No. 16 and No. 19 respectively.

　　Science and Technology Evaluation Metrics (STEM) is proposed by the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences. It is a multiple and stereoscopic evaluation matrix for the medical science and technical level. The evaluation results are released for seven consecutive years from 2014 to2020. In 2020, the STEM of Chinese hospitals adhered to the unified standard, unified source and unified method to construct the evaluation system from three dimensions, namely scientific and technological output, academic impact and scientific and technological conditions. The dimension of scientific and technological output includes journal articles and citations, patents, national and industry standards and guidelines, etc.; the dimension of academic impact includes scientific and technological awards, academic appointments, etc.; the dimension of scientific and technological conditions includes scientific research projects and scientific research platforms. 1634 hospitals were included as the study subjects. The evaluation results are divided into two parts: the comprehensive scientific and technological value and Science and Technology Evaluation Metrics (STEM) of each discipline. In 2020, the evaluation of STEM of Chinese hospitals further increases the weight of direct indicators and emphasizes the actual contribution and performance, while it downplays the title of talents. STEM reflects the actual effect of scientific and technological activities and continuously intensifies the punishment for academic misconduct and strengthens the integrity of scientific research. Moreover, STEM focuses on clinical scientific and technological achievements, ability of clinical research and high-quality research, and the quality of scientific and technological achievements.

　　As an important part of the development of hospital disciplines, medical scientific research is the key to development of disciplines. In recent years, with the overall goal of creating an internationally recognized research oriented modern and strong hospital, our hospital comprehensively implements the discipline climbing project, continuously strengthens the support of scientific and technological innovation, vigorously creates an enabling environment of innovation and attaches importance to innovation, highlights the advantages of key disciplines to achieve good results in scientific and technological innovation. In the past three years, the hospital has been approved to set up eight national clinical medical research centers in Shandong province, four provincial engineering laboratories, and lead the construction of a provincial key laboratory. The number of NSFC projects has been recorded more than 40 for many years in a row. The hospital makes a breakthrough in the excellent youth project. It has been granted major, key and international exchange and cooperation projects. Scientific research funds have continuously exceeded 100 million yuan. In 2021, the hospital won two first prizes of the Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award and 167 projects from the Provincial Natural Science Foundation, the best result in history. The hospital's scientific research rankings have been improved whose social influence has been enhanced.
