  Project introduction:

In 2018, Karolinska Institute in Sweden and Shandong University in China jointly applied for the Sino- Swedish international cooperation project “Study on the interaction between lifestyle factors, pathological changes of brain tissue, cognitive reserve and cognitive decline and dementia onset”. The project relies on six large-scale community-based aging and health research cohorts established by the two parties in China and Sweden, in order to explore complex interactions between lifestyle, brain pathology, cognitive reserve and cognitive decline and onset of dementia among the elderly in China and Sweden.

The cooperative team consists of the existing members of Sino- Swedish Aging Research Network (jointly funded by VR and NSFC), involving multiple disciplines, such as neurology, neurobiology, neuroepidemiology, neuropsychology, neuroimaging, modern biostatistics, which gives full play to the respective expertise of Chinese and Swedish parties. It features the interaction and inclusiveness of multiple disciplines.

Currently, due to joint efforts of both parties, six different cohorts have completed multiple follow-ups of the study population, and have performed AD pathology-related biomarker testing. Since project was approved, more than 20 papers of high impact have been published. The implementation of this project will deepen the understanding of the role and mechanism of lifestyle and intellectual factors in cognitive aging. The project offers a key basis for exploring effective intervention strategies to delay the onset of dementia.

Relying on exchanges and cooperation between the two sides in the early stage, the Sino-Swedish cooperation project, "Reduce the global burden of Alzheimer's disease by strengthening the translation of different social and cultural backgrounds", was approved in 2019. Based on the previous cooperation projects, the project aims to further strengthen the complementary advantages of professional disciplines and resources of two sides. It explores the multi-modal intervention technology solutions for Alzheimer’s disease, which is suitable for the ethnic and socio-cultural background characteristics of China and Sweden. It also aims to develop a sustainable international collaboration to train young scholars in the field of multi-modal intervention of cognitive aging and dementia. At present, the parties have held many academic seminars. Moreover, many young Chinese scholars have visited Sweden for short-term study, which has greatly promoted the growth of the young researchers.
